يقول الأب جوزف قزي في مقدمة الكتاب بأن القوانين الرهبانية في الرهبانيات جميعها، شدّدت على حفظ الصمت، وعينت له أوقاتاً كثيرة في اليوم، كما حدّدت له أمكنة عديدة في الدير، بل معظم الأمكنة المشتركة كالكنيسة وبيت المائدة، والمنامات، والمماشي الداخلية، والغرف الخاصة... هي أمكنة صمت يحترمها الرهبان إحترامهم للمقدسات. وثمة رهبانيات في الكنيسة تنذر الصمت كنذر رابع أو خامس، بالإضافة الى الطاعة والعفّة والفقر والتواضع، هي تمارسه وتقدسه وتلتزم بموجباته، وإن كان من حاجة توجب الكلام، فإنما يكون التعبير عنها بالإشارة والرمز لا بالكلام. ولهذا أيضاً يوجد في التقليد المسيحي نوعين من الصلاة: ًصلاة لفظيةً و ًصلاة عقليةً. الصلاة اللفظية يتلوها المؤمن، وقد تعلمها من الآباء، وورثها عنهم، وقد نظمتها الكنيسة وإعتمدتها.
أما الصلاة العقلية فيقوم بها المؤمن في خلوته وسكونه، وصمته بينه وبين ربه، من دون مشاركة أحد...هذه أعمق وأجدى في تغيير الإنسان من الداخل، وهي للمتأملين في السماويات الغائصين في عالم الروح، أما الصلاة اللفظية فلتنظيم الجماعة المصلية، وترتيب الإحتفالات الشعبية والصلوات العامة. وينهي الأب جوزف حديثه بأنه وتعقيباً على هذه الخواطر في الصمت ومكانته في عالم الروح، ماكان ليعتقد يوماً أن إنساناً يعيش في خضم الحركة الفكرية والإجتماعية تخطر في باله معالجة مثل هذا الموضوع، الذي لم يجد أحداً ممن تجبرهم قوانينهم على عيش الصمت ليقوم للقارئ إختباره، الى أن جاء الدكتور صليبا بعمله هذا حيث وفّى الموضوع حقه وبرع بتناوله من جميع جوانبه بدقة وشمولية وإتقان، راحلاً عبر التاريخ ليعين روّاده في الكنيسة وفي الفكر العالمي. فكان لا بد في الباب الأول من كتابه هذا من درس مفاهيم الصمت في الإنجيل، إذ هي الأساس والقدوة.
أما الباب الثاني فقد خصصه مؤلفه للصمت مفهوماً وإختباراً في الكنيسة (أو الكنائس) الشرقية. هذا كان لا بد له وبعد عرضه للصمت في المشرق من إتباع ذلك بتبيان تراثه وتقاليده في الغرب وكنائسه. فكان هذا هو المحور الذي تدور حوله أبحاث الباب الثالث. وتجدر الإشارة الى أنه تم إغناء الكتاب بملاحق ثلاثة . دار الملحق الأول حول الصمت بين التقليدين الكاثوليكي والأرثوذكسي، وتحدث الملحق الثاني عن الصمت والحالة الرهبانية، وتم تخصيص الملحق الثالث لبحث التصوفين المسيحي والإسلام.
