عندما صدر هذا الكتاب عدّ مرجعاً هاماً في طب العيون لدى الطلاب وأطباء العيون الممارسين والممرضات وفني البصريات وقد أدرك المترجمان حاجة الجامعات والمعاهد العربية في الوطن العربي إلى مرجع طبي بهذه الأهمية فأثرا ترجمته إلى العربية كي يكون بمتناول الأطباء وطلبة العلم إذ يوفر عليهم مضنة الرجوع إلى المراجع الأجنبية. وقد راعى المترجمان الأبعاد عن طريقة الترجمة الحرفية وقاما بنقل المعنى بحرية دون التقيد بأسلوب كاتب النص.
ويضم الكتاب فصولاً عن علم تشريح وعلم جنين العين، الفحص العيني، الأدوية العينية، الشبكة، الزرق، الطب العيني العصبي الأمراض المناعية في العين، مواضع خاصة في طب عيون الأطفال، ومواضيع أخرى عديدة تهم المختصين في طب العيون.
يذكر أن الطبعة المترجمة هي الطبعة الخامسة عشرة وهي طبعة أشمل وأعم حيث تختلف هذه الطبعة عن التي سبقتها بما يلي: أولاً: تقيحات كبيرة في فصل السبيل العيني والصلبة وفصل الرؤية المتدينة وفصل المعالجات العينية وفي الملحقات 1و3. ثانياً: تغيرات هامة في فصل العصبية العينية والليزر وطب العيون والاضطرابات العينية المرافقة للأمراض الجهازية.
