القاهرة أحب المدن إلي المؤلف: مسقط رأسه وفيها قضى معظم مراحل حياته، دائم التجوال في أحيائها، يراقب بنيانها ويسجل في الذاكرة نموها طوال عدة عقود من الزمن، ويكتب عن ذلك مذكرات لم تر النشر وبحوثا نشرت في دوريات وحوليات وصحف، محاولا استنتاج إجابة على تساؤلات تدور في أذهان الكثير من المفكرين والباحثين: القاهرة إلى أين؟ وهذا الكتاب محاولة لَمّ شمل ما كتبه وما لم يكتبه وما يحس به تجاه هذه المدينة العظيمة التاريخية والمعاصرة. متبعا في ذلك منهج الجغرافي والتاريخي والاجتماعي والسياسي حسب مقتضى الحال، وإن كان كل ذلك يلخصه ويهدف إليه منهج «الحياة» لمدينة بموقعها ومساحتها وناسها وتفاعلاتها الدينامية العفوية التي تأتي من استجابة الناس التلقائية لظرف حياتي فقير أو غني نشط أو راكد عامل أو عاطل.. كل يسعى إلى مجرد احتياج للبقاء أو إلى مزيد من رفاهية عيش. كل ذلك يعلو على مخطط ترسمه سياسة عمران بحيث تطوعه للاستجابة التي يحس بها الناس أنها الاختيار الأفضل. متمنيا لهذه المدينة الخالدة دوام البقاء زهرة للمدائن خالية من المتاعب التي نواجهها في السياسة والعمل والتنافر المعماري ومصاعب التنقل بين جنباتها الفسيحة ووسط حشدها السكاني الذي تجاوز ثماني عشر من ملايين الأنفس.
