لقد تجاوز الفكر الجمالي المعاصر تلك الثنائيات بين المثالية والمادية, أو الصراع القائم بين العقلانية والتجريبية، إن اللعب الحر يعني القدرة التجريبية لدى النحات الذي لا يقوم بتغيير طبيعة هذه المواد، بل إن فعل (اللعب) بالمادة يتحدد بتحويلها إلى شكل جمالي جديد. فهذه المادة في النحت لا تحظى بوجودها الاظهاري إلا عندما تتشكل بعملية لعب قصدية من قبل الفنان. والنحت المعاصر أصبح قائماً على خاصية التجريب والتركيب والمعالجات التقنية واللعب الحر ضمن فضاءات الحدث، متوسماً معالجات تتبنى توظيف خامات هي في مجملها إفرازات للمجتمع المعاصر، وأصبح النحات يستخدم أنواع المواد والخامات (تقليدية وغير تقليدية) من خلال توظيفات ومعالجات جمالية مفارقة فقدت خلالها تلك المواد وظيفتها الأساسية، بالتحول نحو مدلولات فنية أخرى متأثرة بالتحولات الفكرية المرتبطة بتطور الفكر العلمي المعاصر.
