كان زمن عصيب وأفضل بكثير السجن والمنفي، وراحت النيران تلتهم الوادي سنين، وبقيت الجثث مردومة تحت الانقاض وطافية فوق النهر تنهش بيها الحيتان ومن نجا نجا وهام وانحشر فى الكهوف وسكن اعالي الجبال والعدو مازال يطارد ويرصد والناس مازالت مرعوبة وهاربة، ومازالت تحي قصة الوادي والخراب يرضعها الأطفال مع حليب أمهاتهم ويتذكرها ويتداولها الكبار وحتي الأحاجي والسمر صار قصة الوادي والخراب والجد الذى هرب! ومن يومها ولا أحد يجرؤ يشعل نار والناس تكد بالليل وتختبئ فى النهار حتى اتسعت حدقات عيونهم وصارو يرون الليل نهار، وراحت الدمية تنتحب!
