في روايتها "آخر القلاع" تقول رائدة الطويل شهادتها على مرحلة معينة من تاريخ لبنان، وتاريخ القضية الفلسطينية، وترصد تأثيرها في الأشخاص والجماعات، وانعكاسها في طبيعة العلاقات، وبهذا المعنى فإن الرواية شهادة فنية (إبداعية) على المرحلة التي تلت الإجتياح الإسرائيلي على لبنان عام 1982م. قدمت خلالها الكاتبة رؤية قاتمة للوضع الفلسطيني داخل حدود مخيم شاتيلا حيث تدور أحداث الرواية وخارج حدود لبنان "فرنسا" حيث مكان اللجوء لـ "سليم" الذي رأى في الغربة الأبدية ملاذاً وحيداً من الطلقات التي كانت تطارد الفدائيين في بيروت، بعد أن ترك محبوبته "شاتيلا" في المخيم، والتي عرفته طفلة لا تعرف عن الحب شيئاً، كانت تأسره داخلها، وهي تسابق غربة زرعها غياب والدها الذي لجأ لغربة الموت، تماماً كما لجأ سليم للغربة في فرنسا.
تركز الرواية على موضوع الإنتماء للوطن، والغربة واللجوء والحرية، وفيها تنجح الكاتبة الطويل في نسج علاقة تناسب بين الإطار العام والحدث الروائي، وفي المعادلة بين الإنقسام السياسي بين فئات متحاربة على المستوى العام والفراق العاطفي القسري على المستوى الخاص، إلا أن الرواية في النهاية تنتصر للحب على الحرب، وذلك عندما تجمع بين "شاتيلا" و "سليم"؛ "توصلي بالسلامة (أنت شاتيلا، الألب، والمخيم، والطفلة يلي رغم صغرها منحتني الفرصة لأسترجع من طفولتها ملامحي يلي ضاعت مني، أديش كنت بحاجة كتفك لأبكي عليها، ولأفرغ على طهارتها كل يلي كان يعتريني من سواد وخوف ...". وإذا كانت الرواية تقول في بدايتها وأحداثها بشاعة الحرب والصراع، فإنها تقول في نهايتها جمال الحب والحياة، وهنا تكمن العبرة المستوحاة منها، وتبرز أهمية أن لا يتخلى الإنسان عن أحلامه وعن رومانسيته ليحيا ويستمر، وبهذا أضافت الكاتبة إلى متعة السرد متعة العاطفة والإحساس بها.
