كانت الأمة الإسلامية قبائل عربية متعددة اللهجات، تختلف في نبرات الصوت، وطريقة . الأداء، ومع ذلك يجمعها اللسان العربي فلو ألزمت بقراءة القرآن الكريم على وجه واحد لشقّ عليهم الأمر، وقد روى عثمان رضي الله عنه. أنه سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "أنزل القرآن على سبعة أحرف كلها شاف كاف". وقد نشأ عن تلك الأحرف السبعة تعدد القراءات، فهي أعم وأشمل من القراءات السبع المعروفة، فلا يتوهم متوهم أن الأحرف السبعة هي القراءات السبع فحسب، لأن القراءات الصحيحة المتواترة عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عشر، وليست سبعاً. في هذا الكتاب جمع المؤلف ما تأدى إليه من قراءة أئمة الأمصال المشهورين بالإيجاز، تذكرة للعالم، وتقريباً على المتعلم. مؤثراً تقريب التراجم، وجمع الأصول، وتهذيب الفروع، وذكر المختلف فيه، والإمساك عن المتفق عليه إلا في المواضع التي تدعو الحاجة إلى ذكرها، ليسهل حفظه، ويقرب تناوله.
وقد ذكر المؤلف ما صح لديه عن الأئمة: 1-نافع في رواية إسماعيل بن جعفر، والمسيبي، وقالون، وورش، 2-ابن كثير في رواية قنبل، والبزي، 3-ابن عامر في رواية ابن ذكوان، وهشام، 4-عاصم في رواية المفضل، وحفص، وأبي بكر من طريق الأعشى ويحيى بن آدم عنه، 5-أبو عمر في رواية أبي عمر الدوري، وأبي شعيب السوسي عن اليزيدي عنه، 6-حمزة في رواية خلف، وخلاّد، 7-الكسائي في رواية أبي عمر الدوري، وأبي الحارث، ونصير، وقتيبة، 8-يعقوب في رواية ردح ورويس. فإذا اتفقت الروايات عن إمام من هؤلاء الأئمة على حرف، ذكره المؤلف وحده فقال: قرأ فلان، وإذا اختلفت الروايات عنه في حرف، ذكر تلك الرواية وحدها هناك.
