الكيمياء الحيوية أو العضوية هي أحد فروع علم الكيمياء . وهي العلم الذي يدرس بناء وخواص وتركيب وتفاعلات المركبات الكيميائية التي تحتوي على عنصر الكربون كعنصر أساسي بالإضافة إلى عناصر أخرى ومن النادر وجود مركب من المركبات العضوية خالي من عنصر الهيدروجين , ويمكن أن تحتوي على أي عدد آخر من العناصر , مثل النيتروجين , والأكسجين , والهالوجينيات وأحيانا قليلة الفسفور أو الكبريت التعريف الأصلي للكيمياء العضوية تم اختياره بصورة خاطئة اتمادا على أن هذه المركبات كانت دائما ما تنتمى بشكل أو بآخر للعمليات الحيوية في الكائنات لحية ولاحقا تم التعامل مع هذه المركبات التي تنتمي للعمليات الحيوية في فرع من فروع الكيمياء العضوية يسمى الكيمياء الحيوية .
بينما تتعامل الكيمياء غير العضوية بعيدا عن مركبات الكربون المعقدة والتي لا تحتوي على روابط كربون - مثل ( أكسيدات الكربون و الأحماض و الأملاح و الكاربيدات و المعادن ) وهذا بالطبع لا ينفي وجود مركبات عضوية غير معقدة لا تحتوي على روابط كربون - كربون مثل ( الميثان ومشتقاته البسيطة ) .
