هذا الكتاب هو في الأصل أطروحة جامعية تقدم بها الباحث الدكتور محمد فخر الدين لنيل درجة الماجستير دبلوم الدراسات العليا في اللغة العربية وآدابها سنة 1994 تحت عنوان البنية السردية والمتخيل في سيرة سيف بن ذي يزن تحت إشراف د. محمد برادة ونال بها هذه الدرجة العلمية بميزة حسن جداً من جامعة محمد الخامس بالرباط...
ويتناول الكتاب فن السير الشعبية العربية أولاً في الفصل الأول من خلال تعالقاته مع المجتمع والتاريخ والأسطورة والحلم... وكذا موقع هذا الجنس الأدبي الشعبي ضمن نظرية الأجناس السردية... كما يقوم في الفصل الثاني بإستخراج البنيات السردية للسيرة الشعبية من خلال تحليل لسيرة متميزة هي سيرة الملك سيف بن ذي يزن يعتمد السيميائيات السردية.
أما في الفصل الثالث فيقوم الكاتب بإستخلاص البنيات التخيلية للسيرة الشعبية بالتوسل بمناهج معاصرة مستمدة من أنثربولوجيا المتخيل وتحليل الرموز وعلم نفس الأعماق.
هكذا يكون الكتاب قد أجاب عن بعض القضايا المهمة التي تثيرها دراسة السير الشعبية والأدب الشعبي بشكل عام... كما فتح آفاق توظيف سرنا الشعبية في مجالات متعددة منها المسرح والسينما والإشهار وغيرها...
