إن طلب العلم الشرعي من أفضل ما يتقرب به المسلم إلى مولاه جل وعلا، وقد كان من دأب السلف الصالح رضوان الله عليهم أجمعين تعليم أولادهم ما يجب عليهم التحلي به من الآداب والأخلاق الحميدة مع شيوخهم وإخوانهم ممن يسعون معهم عند المشايخ، مع مؤدبيهم. ولذلك فقد حرص كثير من العلماء على تحرير الرسائل الصغيرة والكتب المطولة التي تتناول هذا الجانب من التربية الإسلامية.
ومن هذه الرسائل كانت هذه الرسالة التي نقلب صفحاتها والتي دونها الواعظ الكبير "ابن قيم الجوزية"، وفيها يوجه المصنف كلامه إلى ولده أبي القاسم، يحثه فيها-بعد أن لمس توانيه عن الدراسة-على طلب العلم وعلى سلوك طريقة في كسب العلم، ويدله فيها على اللجوء إلى الموفق سبحانه وتعالى في جميع أموره الدينية والدنيوية. ولأهمية هذه الرسالة ولمكانة مؤلفها عني "عمر عبد المنعم" بتحقيقها، والتعليق عليها، وإخراجها، لكي تحصل الفائدة لطلاب العلم بالحصول عليها وتجلى عمله بالتحقيق بـ: تخريج الأحاديث الواردة في متن الرسالة. وتحقيق أسانيدها من حيث الصحة والضعف، وضع بعض التعليقات على ما أبهم في متن الرسالة، ذيل الرسالة بثلاثة فهارس الأول: فهرس لأطراف الحديث، فهرس للجرح والتعديل، فهرس للموضوعات والفوائد.
