هذا الكتاب ليس قصة تاريخية تتألف من مقدمة وعقدة وخاتمة، صيغت للتسلية أو لبثِّ أفكار معينة، فتحرّى لها منشئها تسلسل الأحداث وتكاملها، وصاغها على أحسن ما يهوى، ففاز بإعجاب القراء.
وهذا الكتاب ليس كتاب حديث نبوي يتقصى فيه الباحث نقد الأخبار رواية ودراية، ويفصّلها إلى صحيح وحسن وضعيف، لما يتوقف على ذلك من تشريع تطمئن له النفوس. بل هو كتاب روايات تاريخية، وأخبار متناثرة، وشذرات متفرقة، غيبتها بطون الكتب، عمل المؤلف على إخراجها من الظلمات إلى النور، ونفض غبار الزمان عنها، محاولاً تأليف ما ائتلف منها، وتقييد ما نفر وشرد، بلا زيادة ولا نقصان.
وقد قسم المؤلف الكتاب إلى ثلاثة مباحث: أما الأول والثاني فهما مقدمة الكتاب، وأما الثالث فهو صلب الكتاب، وقد قسمه إلى قسمين:
أ ـ عهود ما قبل الإسلام: تحدث في عن نشأة داريا وأصل القوم الذين عمروها.
ب ـ العهود الإسلامية: رتّب الحديث عنها حسب القرون الإسلامية الهجرية، حيث بدأ بعهد الخلفاء الراشدين، ثم الخلفاء الأمويين، ثم الخلفاء العباسيين وما بعده.
أما منهجه في نسبة الأعلام إلى داريا كان كما يلي:
كل من ترجم له القاضي عبد الجبار الخولاني في كتابه "تاريخ داريا" اقتداءً بابن عساكر في تاريخه، فقد اعتمد كلام الخولاني في "تاريخ داريا" في الأغلب.
كما أنه عدّ دارانياً كل من نسبه المؤرخون وأصحاب التراجم إلى داريا.
