بفضل رحلة "ماء الموائد" يعتبر ابو سالم عبد الله العياشى من نبغ من العياشيين. فرحلته للحج يمكن أن توضع بين دوائر المعارف الاسلامية القديمة, فهى من هذا الوجه: دائرة معارف القرن الحادى عشر/ 17م. وهى تنقسم ابتداء, كما هو الحال فى رحلات الحج, الى سفرتين, أولاهما رحلة الذهاب, والثانية رحلة الإياب, التى عادة ماتكون سريعة الوصف, مبتسرة من حيث كونها اختصاراً لسفرة الذهاب الرئيسية, خاصة فيما يتعلق بالمعلومات الجغرافية الطبيعية التى لا تتكرر, اكتفاء بالاشارة الى ما يستجد عليها من عوارض الطريق, أو سلوك بعض الطرق الفرعية, أو زيارة بعض الأقاليم الاضافية, مثلما حدث فى رحلة العودة فعلا, عندما قرر العياشى التخلف عن القافلة لزيارة مدينة القدس وتوابعها من بلاد جنوب الشام الفلسطينية, الى جانب تفادى الطريق الدولى "المحجة الكبرى" من أجل تفادى برك الماء التى قطعته فى بعض المواضع كما حدث على التخوم الجبلية الجنوبية بمحاذات المغرب الأقصى.
والى جانب طريقى الذهاب والعودة يمكن تقسيم الرحلة الى 6 أقسام نوعية, هى:
البيئة الطبيعية من الطرق والمدن والثروات, السكان والعادات والتقاليد والمعتقدات, الحالة العلمية والثقافية بما تحويه من موضوعات تقليدية, من العلوم الدينية والعقلية, مسألة الطرق الصوفية وحركة الأخوان والزوايا والربط, النوازل المستجدة وخاصة شرب القهوة والدخان ولبس الصوف الفاخر من الجوخ المستورد, الأحوال السياسية التى تشير إليها الرحلة على طول الجناح الغربى لعالم الإسلام, من المغرب الأقصى "الجوانى" وحتى مصر وبلاد الحجاز مابين سنة 1059هـ/ 1649م , وسنة 1074هـ/ 1663م, أى خلال رحلات العياشى الثلاث التى الف منها رحلته: "ماء الموائد".
