كتاب "مشاهير علماء الأمصار" الذى نعنى بنشره للمره الأولى هو أحد آثار علم الجرح والتعديل العائد إلى النصف الأول من القرن الرابع للهجرة، ومؤلفه هو أبو حاتم محمد بن حبان البستى المشهور" الذى ولد حوالى سنة 270 وتوفى فى سنة 354هـ .
وقد صنف الكتاب على طريقة كتب الطبقات المعروفة. وهو فى شكله الراهن يضم ألفا سمائه ترجمة وترجمتين "1602" للمجدثين الموثوقين، دون الضعفاء والمجروحين.وقد نظر فى تصنيفه إلى زمان المترجمين "الصحابة، فالتابعين، فأتباع التابعين" ومكانهم وفق مواطن الثقافة الإسلامية، ولم يراع فيه مبدأ آخر، إذا أغفلنا بعض الترتيب فى سنى الوفيات. ومعظم المحدثين المذكورين منسوب إلى القرنين الأول والثانى من الهجرة.
