يعني علم الفيزيولوجيا تفسير العمليات الحيوية لوظائف الأعضاء داخل الجسم الحي؛ والفيزيولوجيا تتعلق بكل كائن حي من أبسط الكائنات حتى أعقدها، وهذا هو سبب كثرة مجالات إهتماماتها في الأحياء الحيوانية والنباتية فهناك الفيزيولوجيا الحيوانية والفيزيولجيا النباتية.
أما في الفيزيولوجيا الحيوانية فتتنوع الإختصاصات، من الفيزيولوجيا الخلوية إلى الفيزيولوجيا العصبية والفيزيولوجيا العضلية وفيزيولوجيا الحواس وغيرها، وذلك حسب العضو الذي تتناوله الدراسة.
ولكن هنا لا بد أن نذكر دوماً أن الفيزيولوجيا هي وحدة متكاملة لا يوجد بين أبوابها حدود فاصلة، على الرغم من أن أي موضوع فيزيولوجي يكون أساسه وجود أبواب رئيسة ثلاثة للوظائف الحيوية في الجسم الحيواني، أولها: وظائف التغذية ثم وظائف التنظيم وأخيراً وظائف الإتصال التي تضم كل مواضيع الإرتباط بين المتعضية والوسط الخارجي.
فالمادة الحية في توازنها الحركي، إنما تتصل مع العالم الخارجي عبر جملة على درجة عالية من الدقة حيث تستقبل المعلومات ثم تترجمها وترد عليها بالشكل المناسب الذي يؤمن لها ديمومتها وإستقلابها.
وتقع تحت هذا المجال وظائف الإستقبال عن طريق الحواس Senses ثم وظائف التنسيق في الجملة العصبية Coordination ثم وظائف التنفيذ عبر جملة الفاعلات Effectors من عضلات وغيرها، وستكون وظائف الحواس والفاعلات موضوع هذا الكتاب.
