يرسم هذا الكتاب صورة جديدة وحيوية للمجتمع المصرى إبان العصر العثمانى، فيلج المؤلف إلى الوحدة الأولى فى بناء المجتمع المصرى وهو البيت أو العائلة، متخذا من البيت المغربى نموذجاً لفهم آليات تكوين الثروة العائلية، وبالتالى الثروة المجتمعية إجمالا إبان هذه الفترة التاريحية التى وصفها العديد من الكتاب بالتخلف والجمود والركود.. لذا جاءت هذه الدراسة الممتعة التى تتبعت العلاقات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية فى مصر من خلال أنشطة التجار، كما تتبع المؤلف عائلات التجار وهى تنشئ الروابط الشخصية من أجل دعم أنشطتهم وشبكاتهم التجارية، وتتبع رأس المال التجارى وهو يتغلغل إلى كل مياديم الانتاج الزراعى والصناعى والعمرانى، إضافة إلى عمليات انتقال الثروة من جيل إلى جيل، والمشكلات التى واجهت هذه العائلات من أجل المحافظة على قرواتها ووجودها المادى والاجتماعى أمام تغيرات التيارات التجارية وابتزازت السلطة، ويطرح الباحث فى النهاية سؤالا كبيرا: إذا لدينا عائلات تجارية كبيرة، ورءوس أموال مهمة، فلماذا لم نتطور لنلحق بالغرب؟!
