تكاد تكون مادة ثمار القلوب للثعالبي تمثل الأثر الفني للتجربة اليومية والواقعية والاجتماعية والفكرية والدينية المعادلة له. فهي تصدر من منابع خاصة بها، تخيرها الثعالبي بدراية العالم بشؤون المسائل التي يتصدى لها. وهي المنابع نفسها، هي الأعماق في بنية حياته، وتؤسس لثقافته، بدناً وروحاً، لهذا تبدو أمثال الثعالبي في ثمار القلوب، أكثر من أية مجموعة من الأمثال التي صنفها هو أو غيره من علماء الأمثال، تتصل بأطوار الإنسان التي بلغها في الحقب المختلفة. وهي لذلك تنبع بلا شك من خاصية وحيوية للروح الإنسانية، كما أنها تهيئ لإشباع حاجة إنسانية أساسية مما يجعلها تتسم بسمة خاصة يحتاج إليها كل باحث يتحرى الدفائن لبلوغ القوانين العامة.
فكتاب ثمار القلوب يبرهن لنا بما لا يدع مجالاً للشك أن الأمة العربية التي كانت تحافظ على دورها كوسيط تجاري بين أمم الأرض غربها وشرقها وجنوبها وشمالها فقد كانت أيضاً وسيطاً معرفياً فيما بين هذه الأمم عينها كما يقول علماء الإناسة، لأنها كانت تحمل من هذه الأمم وإليها، بالإضافة إلى أنواع التجارات المختلفة أضاف العلوم وألوان الحكايات المتنوعة. وكان منها ما يستقر في البيئة العربية كما كان منها ما يرحل عنها بفعل قانون التعويض والملائمة والحياة.
فالثعالبي في كتابه هذا خلافاً لما أرد في سافر كتبه التي ترد هذا المورد، إنما بناه على ذكر الأشياء مضافة ومنسوبة إلى أشياء مختلفة يتمثل بها، ويكثر بها، ويكثر في النظم والنثر على ألسنة الخاصة والعامة استعمالها كقولهم: غراب نوح، ونار إبراهيم، وذئب يوسف، وعصا موسى، وخاتم سليمان ونسر لقمان الخ... أو كقولهم: تفاح الشام، وسكر الأمواز، وورد جور.. الخ.
