"معالي الرتب لمن جمع بين شرفي الصحبة والنسب" أودع فيه مؤلفه أسماء من جمع بين النسب الهاشمي والصحبة، وأدخل فيه كل صاحب وقريب. وهو عمل لم يسبق أحد إلى مثله من قبل، اعتمد فيه المؤلف على مسمى القرابة، وعلى ما ذكره الحافظ في فتح الباري. كتاب فضائل الصحابة، باب مناقب قرابة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. واعتمد في مسمى الصحبة على مصطلح المحدثين كما ذكره الحافظ العلائي في تحقيق منيف الرتبة لمن ثبت له شريف الصحبة.
كما راعى أن يذكر في كتابه من ثبتت قرابته برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من جهة عبد المطلب، من ذكر أو أنثى. وثبتت صحبة ولو بطريق ضعيفة، كما ذكر فيه من أدرك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من أدرك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صغيراً واتفقوا على صحبته ومن كان في القرابة من المشاهير وله ذكر وأثر وترجح عدم صحبته.
وقد عمد إلى ذكر اسم القريب الصحابي كاملاً وكنيته ونسبه، وإسلامه وهجرته، وإسلامه وصحبته، ثم يتبع ذلك بحديثه وروايته، إن كان له حديث ورواية، ويبين إن كانت له رواية في الصحيحين أو أحدهما أو في السنن كما قام بتخريج الأحاديث المذكورة. وقد جاء الكتاب في مقدمة وستة فصول.
