لقد بدأ الإهتمام بدراسة مخلفات حضارات ما قبل التاريخ في القرن التاسع عشر، ولم يكن الباحثيين يعترفون بفترة ما قبل التاريخ فقد سماها البعض فترة ما قبل الطوفان والبعض سماها فترة التوحش، لكن توالي الإكتشافات عن بقايا ما قبل التاريخ وخاصة البقايا البشرية والحيوانية، جعل الباحثين يقترحون عدة تسميات لحضارات في ما قبل التاريخ لكن دون تسمية الفترة بشكل كامل، ففي 1843 اقترح الباحث كليم klemm ثلاث مراحل حضارية مر بها الإنسان، هي: مرحلة التوحش ومرحلة الإنصياع ومرحلة الحرية، وبعد ثلاثين عام قام مورغان morgan بتقسيم حياة الإنسان إلى عصر التوحش وعصر البربرية وعصر الحضارة.
وهذا الموضوع يهدف للتعريف بحضارات ما قبل التاريخ والتعرف على ما تركه لنا أجدادنا القدامى، وهو يجيب على الكثير من التساؤلات التي تتعلق بالمساهمة التي قدمها سكان شمال أفريقيا والصحراء في الحضارات الإنسانية على مر العصور، وبشكل خاص قدم التعمير البشري لهذه المنطقة وأصالته فيها، وللرد على الذين يدعون أن هذه البلاد عقيمة حضارياً.
