كانت مصر هي مسقط رأسي، وملعب أترابي ومجمع ناسي، ومغنى عشيرتي وحامتي، وموطن خاصتي وعامتي، وجؤجؤي الذي ربى جناحي في وكره، وعش مأربي فلا تهوى الأنفس غير ذكره، لا زلت مذ شذوت العلم، وآتاني ربي العطاء والفهم، أرغب في معرفة أخبارها، واحب الاشراف على الاغتراف من آبارها، وأهوى مساءلة الركاب عن سكان ديارها، فقدت بخطي في الاعوام الكثيرة وجمعت من ذلك فوائد قل ما يجمعها كتاب أو يحويها لعزتها وغرابتها أهاب، إلا أنها ليست بمرتبة على مثال، ولا مهذبة بطريقة ما نسج على منوال، فأردت أن ألخص منها أنباء ما بديار مصر من الآثار الباقية، عن الأمم الماضية والقرون الخالية، وما بقى بقسطاط مصر من المعاهد، ولم يبق إلا أن يمحو رسمها الفناء والعدم، وأذكر ما بمدينة القاهرة من آثار القصور الزاهرة، وما اشتملت عليه من الخطط والأصقاع، وحوته من المباني البديعة الأوضاع، مع التعريف بحال من أسس ذلك من أعيان الأمائل، وحوته من المباني البديعة الأوضاع، مع التعريف بحال من أسس ذلك من أعيان الأمائل، والتنويه بذكر الذي شادها من سراة الأعاظم والأفاضل، وأنثر خلال ذلك نكتًا لطيفة، وحكمًا بديعة شريفة، من غير إطالة ولا إكثار، ولا إجحاف مخل بالغرض ولا اختصاره، بل وسط بين الطرفين، وطريق بين بين، فلهذا سميته (كتاب المواعظ والاعتبار في ذكر الخطط والآثار).
