هذا الكتاب لون آخر من ألوان التصنيف في السيرة النبوية، فهو مصنف في ختم "سيرة ابن هشام" للحافظ شمس الدين السخاوي (ت902هـ).
والمصنفات في الختم: يتم تصنيفها أو إملاؤها برسم الانتهاء من قراءة كتاب من الكتب، وقد صنف السخاوي أختاماً كثيرة في فنون شتى، منها في السيرة:
"رفع الإلباس في ختم سيرة ابن سيد الناس"، و"القول المرتقي في ختم دلائل النبوة للبيهقي"، و"الإلمام في ختم سيرة ابن هشام" ومما ينبغي التنويه به هنا، أن الحافظ ابن ناصر الدين الدمشقي (ت842هـ)، قد سبق إلى التأليف في ختم سيرة ابن هشام، لكنه لم يتحدث عن خصائص السيرة الهشامية، ومناقب مصنفها ومآثره، إذ سلك الإيجاز والاختصار.
بيد أن السخاوي أبدع في هذا الكتاب، وأتى فيه بالعجب العجاب، حيث تحدث فيه عن ترجمة ابن إسحاق وابن هشام، وذكر شيوخهما وتلامذتهما، ثم تحدث عما صنع ابن هشام في السيرة، وكيف أبدع ف يترتيبه وترصيفه؟ ولماذا نسبت إليه؟ وأضيفت إلى عمل يديه؟
ثم تحدث عن المؤلفات في المغازي والسير، والأعلام والدلائل، والمعجزات والشمائل، والخصائص وغيرها، علاوة على أن كتب الختم تعد مرجعاً مهماً في دراسة مناهج المصنفين، إذ يتضمن كثير منها خلاصة الاستقراء لتلك المناهج، وهذا هو السبب الذي جعلني أحقق هذا الكتاب، لحاجة الناس إلى معرفة منهج ابن هشام في سيرة ابن إسحاق، ثم لمكانة مصنف هذا الختم في هذا الفن.
