تلقى بيتر وقريباه يوماً دعوات غريبة لتمضية إجازة العطلة الصيفية في هينلي كريك، وكانت كل الدعوات مرفقة بدفتر يتضمن التعليمات الضرورية للوصول إلى البلدة، بالإضافة إلى خريطة مفصلة للمنطقة. وما إن يصل بيتر حتى تبدأ أمور غريبة بالحصول تباعاً. إذ يكتشف الأقرباء الثلاثة أن الدعوات قد أُرسلت إلى عدة أولاد غيرهم. وبطريقة مُشفّرة ومعقدة، يتم توجيههم جميعاً للتجمع عند شجرة المشنوق في منتصف الليل، حيث تلاقيهم فنفولة – وهي إحدى مخلوقات شجرة الصفصاف، ومُرسلة الدعوات – وتخبرهم أنهم سينقسمون إلى فريقين، وسيخوضون مباراة تهدف إلى إعادة النهر إلى مجراه الطبيعي.
وهكذا يبدأ التحدي بين الفريقين اللذين يسعى كل منهما إلى الفوز. غير أن بيتر الذي يتصف بذكاء حاد هو الذي ينجح أخيراً في العثور على الصندوق الذي يُحدّد الفريق الفائز.
