تقول مؤلفة الكتاب بأن ما دفعها لتأليف كتابها هذا عن البابا في حياته الخاصة هو شخصيته المتسمة بالهدوء، وما حاولت الحديث عنه في كتابها. إنما هو برنامج إنسان غير عادي، الكبيرة منها والصغيرة، ومزاجه وردود فعله في بادء الأمر لم تكن تفهم لماذا يتلقى يوحنا بولس الثاني، أينما كان التصفيق والهتاف الشديدين... فبقدر ما كانت تزداد معرفتها له شيئاً فشيئاً، كانت تكتشف كم كان هذا البابا، المعدي بهدوئه، شخصاً مواهبياً. كانت قبلاً قد رأته كثيراً في كبالته الخاصة، وفي طائرته، وفي الكنائس الصغيرة، وفي قداساته الجماهيرية، ورأته وهو يمنح سر العماد لأطفال في الكنيسة، وهو يحتفل في مار بطرس في روما بيوبيله الكهنوني يحيط به مئات من الكهنة، ورأته أمام الآلاف من الحجاج في هافانا وبرلين وفيينا في أورشليم كما في باريس، في حضرته، لم تستطع أبداً أن تتماسك عن التأثر الذي كان يصل بها أحياناً حتى ذرف الدموع، فقد أحست بأن له هالة البابا الطبيعية، فهو خليفة بطرس ونائب المسيح، وفيه أيضاً وهج صوفية رجل عظيم يعضده الإيمان، فكان لحضوره عندها صدىً عميقاً من الشعور بأنه حاضر مع كل شخص على حدة. وقد استجاب لها عندما سألته امدادها بالمعلومات حول شخصه لتأليف كتابها هذا وذلك بلطف لامتناه، ومنحها الكثير من بركة لإتمام هذا الكتاب.
كارولين بيكوزي، مؤلفة الكتاب، كانت مصممة على مقابلة الحبر الأعظم، البابا يوحنا بولس الثاني، واستجوابه وتصويره. وبقيت على هذا التصميم بضع سنوات إلى أن تحقق حلمها، واستطاعت أن تحصل على الموعد المنتظر واخترقت الباب البرونزي.
يتألف الكتاب من أحد عشر فصلاً، تروي فيه المؤلفة حياة البابا يوحنا بولس الثاني من خلال: أصدقاءه، علاقاته، زوّاره، أسفاره إلى الخارج، محاولات اغتياله، سر ظهور العذراء مريم في فاتيما (البرتغال) وعبادته لها، أهدافه في الحياة وإصراره على توحيد الكنيستين الكاثوليكية والأرثوذكسية.
في شخصية هذا البابا وهج صوفي يشدك إليه لتراقب حياته الزمانية وحياته اللازمانية. وهذا ما حاول كتاب بيكوزي أن يكشفه.
