اليوغا مصطلح ملتبس، فقد تغيّرت دلالتها من قرن إلى آخر، ومن تراث إلى آخر، فإذا كان هناك، عملياً، يوغا كلاسيكية، نسّقية، هناك يوغا شعبية أيضاً "غربية"؛ وبعد ذلك، إذا كان هناك يوغا تنسّكيه، فإن يوغا أخرى شبقية، تُناظِرها، وإذا كانت اليوغا ممارسة "سحرية" في المقام الأول في بعض التقاليد أو الطوائف، فإنها عكس ذلك تماماً في تراثات أخرى، إذ أنها بصورة خاصة، وسيلة علمية لتوحيد النفس البشرية مع النفس الإلهية، وهذا الإختلاف الكبير في الدلالات والقيم ذو معنى، من حيث الوظيفة التي لليوغا في تاريخ الروحانية الهندية.
ثلاث سنوات من الدراسة في جامعة كالكوتا، وإقامةً لمدة ستة أشهر في أشرام ريشيكِش في جبال الهيملايا، سمحت للمؤلّف بأن يطبّق تجربته الخاصة على هذه المسائل كلّها.
