جاء هذا الكتاب ليلقي الضوء على الدور الذي قامت به القبائل البربرية في شمال افريقيا في رسم العلاقة بين الدولة الفاطمية في المغرب ومصر بعد ذلك والدولة الأموية في الاندلس وقد حاول الباحث للوصول الى هذه الغاية من أن يعتمد على كثير من المصادر الأولية المتوافرة، مما أكسب النتائج التي توصل اليها أهمية واضحة.
ولقد اهتم الباحث بالتوزيع القبلي للبربر خلال فترة الدراسة، وهي 279هـ - 422 هـ، وقد انعكس هذا التوزيع على العلاقة بين الدولتين. والأسباب التي أدت الى وقوف زناته وصنهاجه الى جانب الأمويين في الأندلس وكتامه وصنهاجه الى جانب الفاطمين في شمال افريقيا.
وفي هذه الأسباب حاول الباحث أن يعزيها الى الأسباب السياسية والاقتصادية والدينية.
كما وأوضح الباحث في هذه الدراسة كذلك الدور الذي لعبه البربر ولا سيما قبيلة كتامة في نشر المذهب الفاطمي في شمال افريقيا وتثبيت الدعوة الفاطمية، وأخيراً فإن الباحث توصل الى نتيجة مفادها أن قبائل البربر الثلاث كتامة وزناته وصنهاجه كانت هي الأداة الفعلية التي استعملت في الصراع بين الدولتين الفاطمية بالمغرب ومصر والأموية بالأندلس طيلة القرن الرابع الهجري.
