ترجع "روائع القصص" السبع في هذا المجلد، كلها، إلى الحقبة الواقعة بين نشر "بردفينيوس" والفراغ من "الربيع الأولمبي". وهي تقدم شاهداً على فن القصص النثري عند شبتلر قبل نهاية القرن الماضي وفي مستهل القرن الجديد.
وفي تحليل للخصائص المميزة يقول الكاتب أنه أراد في هذه المجموعة أن يقدم "تجاريب لأكثر الأساليب النثرية تبياناً". "أسلوب السرد القصصي بهدف التسلية، والأساطير الألمانية، والمذهب الطبيعي الروس".
والقاسم المشترك لهذه المجموعة القصصية هو الجو السويسري، حيث يتم في "اِكزانوِتسجيلجن" إسقاط هذا من الحولي-التاريخية وفقاً لطريقة مفصلة، فيما يسمى "الواقعية الشعرية" في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر. والروائي حاز على جائزة نوبل في الآداب للعام 1919.
