يعد كتاب في الجبر والمقابلة من مصادر التراث العربي الخاصة بكتب الرياضيات، مؤلفه الشيخ الإمام شجاع بن أسلم، المعروف بأبي كامل الحاسب (850-930م) ويعد أول عالم عربي في الجبر بعد محمد بن موسى الخوارزمي، لم يعرف المؤرخون الكثير عن حياته، يذكره إبن ابي يعقوب النديم في الفهرست بأنه من أهل مصر وكان فاضلاً حاسباً عالماً، وكان من كبار علماء الجبر في العصور الوسطى وتعد أعماله هامة في الحساب والجبر. وهذا الكتاب واحد من مصنفاته وهو مقسم إلى أربعة أقسام في كتاب واحد (الجبر والمقابلة، تطبيق الجبر على الهندسة، المعادلات السيالة، رياضيات التسلية والمتواليات). يحتوي المخطوط – كما يشير محقق الكتاب – المعادلات الستة النموذجية التي ذكرها الخوارزمي ويذكر ذلك أبي كامل بقوله "بأنه رأى كتاب الجبر والمقابلة لمحمد بن موسى الخوارزمي" ولكن أبي كامل يذكر بأنه أضاف فروعاً أخرى تؤدي إلى غير الضروب الستة التي ذكرها الخوارزمي في كتابه (...) وهي أعداد وجذور وأموال، وهنا يستعرض أبو كامل المعادلات الستة النموذجية وهي تشبه ما جاء عند الخوارزمي، ثم يستعرض عدة مسائل في تقسيم الشعرة إلى قسمين (س) و (10 – س) والعمليات عليها (...) واعتبر أبو كامل بتجريد جبري واضح وهام المساحات والمستقيمات كمجاهيل وهذا سبق لأبي كامل في هذه الفترة.
هذا، وقد اتبع في شرحه للمخطوط على تعليقات رياضية برموز حديثة لفهم النص ووضعه في سياقه العملي والتاريخي الضروري.
