Book Description
ولد أيسوب حوالي 620 قبل الميلاد، وتوفي عام 560، ورغم أنه من المستبعد أن يكون إيسوب مؤلف جميع الحكايات المنسوبة إليه، إلا أن شهرته القصصية كانت عظيمة وواسعة إلى درجة جعلت الناس ينسبون إليه كل حكاية يسمعونها.
توحي الأدلة القليلة المتوفرة حول إيسوب في الأقاويل، وفي الإشارات إليه في مختلف المصادر الإغريقية (حيث يرد ذكره عند أرستوفانيس وأفلاطون، وزينون، وأرسطو) أنه ولد إما في جزيرة سامُس الإغريقية أو في كوتايوم، أكبر مدن إقليم فريجيا حوالي 620 قبل الميلاد، ومن الشائع عنه أنه كان عبداً مملوكاً لمواطن إغريقي من سكان جزيرة سامُس يُدعى إيادمُن.
ولقد أعتقه إيادمُن لما رأى منه من الحكمة والدهاء اللذين كان لهما الفضل في حل خصومات سيده، ويُعتقد أن إيسوب سافر بعد تحرره إلى أثينا، حيث راح يدافع عن عامة الناس مستخدماً حكاياته لفضح الطغاة وظلمهم، فذاع صبته سريعاً، مما أثار إنتباه بايسستراتوس، حاكم أثينا المستبد والعدو اللدود لحرية التعبير، وفي عام 560 قبل الميلاد حُكم على إيسوب بالموت بتهمة التحديف وأُلقي به من فوق جرف في هيبانيا.
وعندما سُمح أخيراً بحرية الكلام في المدن الإغريقية بعد موت إيسوب، درج أهل العلم والبلاغة على إستخدام هذه الحكايات - التي ظلت تُداولِها الألسن حتى ذلك التاريخ - مُنطَلَقاً لسجالاتهم الأخلاقية والوعظية، وقد ظهرت أول مجموعة لهذه الحكايات تحت عنوان "مجموعة الحكايات الإيسوبية" حوالي عام 300 قبل الميلاد في مكتبة الإسكندرية التي أسسها الخطيب والسياسي اللامع ديمتريوس فاليريوس، ثم أتى عبدٌ إغريقيٌّ آخر، يُدعى فايدروس، فحاكى هذه الحكايات باللغة اللاتينية، فشكلت، بالإضافة إلى حكايات أخرى من الهند وليبيا، أساس الحكايات التي نعرفها اليوم.
وظهرت أبرز مجموعة لحكايات إيسوب بالإنكليزية عام 1484 طبعها الناشر الإنكليزي وليم كاكستون، لقد شهد التاريخ ميلاد الكثيرين ممن ساروا على خطى إيسوب من جوناثن سويفت إلى بنجامين فرانكلين، ومن ليو تولستوي إلى أوسكار وإيلد، لكن الهدف المشترك لهؤلاء جميعاً هو إما إبراز حقيقة كونية أو إسداء موعظة أخلاقية.
