تلعب الرسالة دوراً حيوياً في الإدارات الحكومية المختلفة والمنشآت التجارية بإعتبارها إحدى وسائل الإتصال، وبصفتها سفير المرسل إلى المرسل إليه، وإذا كانت الرسالة مستوفية شروطها الفنية، ومستكملة مقوماتها العملية ساعد ذلك على نجاحها في أداء وظيفتها.
ورجال الأعمال يعتبرون الرسالة الجيدة عاملاً من عوامل شهرة المنشأة التجارية، والرسالة السيئة عاملاً هداماً يسيء إلى سمعتها، ويضرها ضرراً بليغاً.
فالرسالة في شكلها المنسق، وأسلوبها الواضح المهذب، وجودة خطها، ونوع ورقها، تؤثر في النفس تأثيراً قوياً لا يقل عن قوة الإعلان أو الصحافة.
وإن كتابة الرسائل ليس أمراً هيناً على كل كاتب، إنها أشبه بإلقاء خطبة في جمع من الناس، وفي الحالتين يتجمع في ذهن المرء عدد من الأفكار والمشاعر ولكنه كثيراً ما يجد صعوبة عندما يحاول التعبير عنها بشكل سليم، أو في صياغة الكلمات الأولى التي تمهد الطريق لبقية الموضوع المراد طرحه.
وقد عرفت الرسائل منذ أقدم العصور واستعمل الملوك الأقدمون الرسائل ووجهودها إلى أمثالهم من الملوك إما بقصد السلم وإما الحرب إما لتحقيق علاقات تجارية طيبة أو لأغراض أخرى وعندما أضاء نور الإسلام سماء الجزيرة العربية، استعمل الرسول محمد (صلى الله عليه وسلم) الرسائل كأسلوب في توجيه الدعوى للملوك من أجل الدخول في الإسلام.
واستعمل الإنسان الكتابة ولا يزال يستعملها لتصوير أفكاره وما يدور في خلده، ولذا تعد الكتابة الوسيط الأول لنقل الحضارة البشرية من جيل إلى جيل آخر فالكتابة هي أداء المعرفة والعلم وكتابة الرسائل وفن يقوم على جمال الأسلوب وبراعة التصنيف وسلامة الذوق.
