لعبت المدارس والمعاهد التقليدية، في شرق وغرب الوطن، كغيرها من المدارس الأخرى في الشمال والجنوب، دوراً كبيراً، يتجلى أثره على الصعيدين الثقافي والجهادي والنضالي، وهو الذي لا يمكن لأي كان أن ينكره أو يتجاهله، أو يقلل من أهميته وآثاره في عمق تاريخنا.
وقد حظي الموضوع لدى مستشرقين ومؤرخين، بما يستحقه من العناية والإهتمام، فألفوا فيه الكتب، ووضعوا فيه البحوث المطولة، وخصوه بالدراسات والمقالات، التي نشروها في كبريات الجرائد المجلات، كالمجلة الإفريقية، التي تعد من أهم المراجع التاريخية الهامة، وممن كتبوا وألفوا نذكر: إيفون تيرا، ودينو كوبلاني، والمقدم لاقريد، ولويس رين، وأوغست برنار، وهنري زيراس، ورونيه باص، وفيروا، وغيرهم.
اشتهرت الجزائر، بوفرة المدارس والعلماء، وانتشرت المدارس الكبرى التقليدية بالجزائر الكبرى، في تلمسان، وبجاية، وبونة (عنابة)، ومازونة، وقسنطينة على طول العهود التاريخية، وفي الشمال (معاهد القبائل الكبرى)، والجنوب (القرارة، والزيبان، والهامل).
ظهرت هذه المعاهد، في تدريس الفقه والعقيدة في التوحيد، وقد حصرت برامجها العلمية في إتقان مواد الشريعة والعقيدة، واللغة العربية وآدابها، مع ما يمكن أن يكون ردفاً في إتقان مواد الشريعة والعقيدة، واللغة العربية وآدابهان مع ما يمكن أن يكون ردفاً في إتقان علوم العقليات، مثل: الحساب لمعرفة الفرائض، والمنطق لبناء العقيدة على البراهين.
وأشهر هذه المدارس، كاتن التاشفينية، ومدرسة العباد، واليعقوبية، ومدرسة ابني الإمام في تلمسان، ومدرسة سيدي الحلوي، ومدرسة العلامة السنوسي بتلمسان، ودرسة الجامع الكبير بتلمسان، ومدرسة جامع سيدي الهواري بوهران، ومدرسة مازونة، والمدرسة الراشدية بمعسكر، وأيضاً المدرسة المحمدية ومدرسة "الكرط" في معسكر، ومدرسة القيطنة في بوحنيفية معسكر، ومدرسة وجامع الليث وأبي مروان الشريف، ببونة، ومدرسة وجامع الباي... من مآثر صالح باي.
