خلال إشرافي على تدريب المهندسين المتخرجين حديثاً لاحظت الفارق الكبير بين المادة العلمية التي درسوها في كلية الهندسة وأنظمة الإتصالات التي يتم التعامل معها، وهو أمر واجهته شخصياً بعد تخرجي؛ لذلك بدأت بجمع المادة العلمية التي أصبحت النواة لهذا الكتاب.
يبدأ هذا الكتاب مع بدايات أنظمة الإتصالات بإختراع المبرقة (Telegraph) وإختراع الهاتف والإتصال اللاسلكي، ثم إرسال التناظري والرقمي والمقاسم الهاتفية والمايكروويف والأقمار الصناعية والإتصالات اللاسلكية بأنواعها، وصولاً إلى الألياف البصرية إلى آخر التقنيات المستخدمة فيها والمتمثلة في توصيل الألياف البصرية للمساكن.
ويختتم الكتاب بالشرح عن التقنيات المستخدمة في الشبكات Networking من مثل Ethernet وATM وتقنيات السنوات الأخيرة مثل VoIP أما الفصل الأخير فيتحدث عن شبكة الإنترنيت.
الكتاب معد بلغة مبسطة بعيداً عن المعادلات الرياضية المعقدة، وهو مناسب ككتاب للمختصين من المهندسين والفنيين، إضافةً لغير المختصين الذين يرغبون في الإطلاع على التقنيات الحديثة في مجال الإتصالات.
