يرجع نسب "أبو يحيي جعفر الحلي النجفي" إلى الحسين بن علي بن أبى طالب وهو من أشهر مشاهير شعراء عصره، ومن أركان النهضة الأدبية في القرن الثلاث عشر، كان "الحلي" أدبياً محاضراً شاعراً، قوي البديهة، حسن العشرة، مدح السلاطين والعلماء، فهيمن على مجالسهم الأدبية وهو شاب لم يبلغ الثلاثين، فأعجب به الكبير والصغير، واحترمه القوي والضعيف، وساد ذكره في محيطه وانتشر في العراق وعبر ما وراء الجزيرة، بمرور الزمن اندثرت أشعاره، وضاعت قصائده التي كان ينظمها على البديهة في الأبيات القليلة، وكان من موفقية الشيخ محمد حسين آل كاشف، أنه عثر على نسخة نادرة من ديوان شعره "سحر بابل وسجع البلاد" فعمد إلى تحقيقه وتصحيحه، وهدفه خدمة الثقافة والأدب والعلم لأن الديوان المذكور فيه تحقيقات وتعليقات نافعة تاريخية واجتماعية، وهو من أندر كتب التراث الإسلامي في القرن الثالث عشر، ومن أهمها نظراً لما تتضمنه من أشعار فريدة تكشف عن واقع ذلك القرن وتصور حياة أترف علماء وأمراء تلك الفترة الزمنية.
