عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

ليس التحليل النفسي، كما يرى فروم في هذا الكتاب، مجرد وسيلة للعلاج، بل هو وسيلة لفهم الذات، أي إنه وسيلة في فن العيش، وهي أهم وظيفة يمكن أن تكون للتحليل النفسي.
ويفضّل المؤلف مصطلح "الفن" على مصطلح "التقنية" بالنسبة إلى التحليل النفسي لأن مفهوم التقنية التحليلية النفسية يشكو من خلل، إذ يبدو أنه يشير إلى شيء غير حي، ومن ثم غير قابل للتطبيق على الإنسان.
إن التحليل النفسي هو عملية فهم الذهن الإنساني، ولا سيما أن ذلك الجانب هو غير شعوري، إنه فن كفهم الشعر؛ فن إصغاء المرء إلى نفسه وإلى نفوس الآخرين.
ولا يقتصر هذا الكتاب على تزويد المحللّين النفسيين بخلاصة خبرة فروم الطويلة في التحليل والعلاج النفسيين، بل يقدم للقارئ المهتمّ ما يساعده على الإصغاء إلى نفسه وفهم الدلالات السيكولوجية لتجاربه، وكذلك على تغيير سلوكه، ويوضح أهمية "التركيز" في عملية التحليل، وإمكانية التحرر من القلق والجشع وأكبر قدر من النرجسية، وفائدة التقمص الإنفعالي في فهم ما يعانيه الآخرون.
وفي هذا الكتاب يرى القارئ أين تتفق آراء فرويد وفروم وأين تختلف، وما الذي يساعده على تعميق فهمه النفسي.
وبالإضافة إلى ما يقدّمه الكتاب من آراء نظرية في التحليل، فهو يشفعها بالأمثلة التوضيحية، ويثريها بتواريخ الحالات، وهو ينضح بالتضامن العميق بين المحلِّل والمحلَّل، وبقدرة المؤلف، كما يقول العالم النفسي راينر فونك، على الإدراك الفردي والمستقل للمشكلات الأساسية للإنسان.
