إن الراصد لواقع أمة المسلمين اليوم لايعرف على وجه اليقين ما إذا كانت هذه الأمة جادة فى البحث لها عن دور فاعل يخرج بها من صفوف دول العالم الثالث المتخلف المفعول به دائما، أم أنها اكتفت بهذا الانكماش والانبطاح طوال هذه القرون.
فليس يعد حكيماً من لم يكن لنفسه خصيما وحسيبا، لذا آن أوان النظر فى أحوالنا كى نعرف أين نحن من السبيل إلى استرداد الاعبتار بعد أن صرنا إلى ما نكره ترى هل لم يبق لنا أمل إلا فى زمن آخر وعلى يد جيل آخر؟
ولا يحق لنا نندهش ونتساءل عن سبب هوان المسلمين ومذلتهم، فذلك أمر حتمى يتيسر فهمه فى ضوء السنن والنواميس. فأعداؤنا عملوا واجتهدوا ونحت تكاسلنا وتقاعسنا. هو صنعوا أسلحتهم التى يقهروننا بها، ولم نقو على صنع شئ- أى شئ - لا الطائرة أو السياة أو المدفع.
ولابد من امتلاك شجاع النظر إلى الذات وانتقادها، وتشخيص أدوائها، وجلدها إن اقتضى الأمر ذلك. ولابد وأن نرى ما علة هذا الهوان، إن العلة تتمثل فى عاملين أساسيين: أولهما هو الاستبداد وقد تناولناه فى كتاب سابق، وثانيهما هو اعتقال العقل المسلم وتجميده واستراخاصه والحط من شانه، وهذا هو موضوع كتابنا الذى بين يديك وقد تم هذا الاعتقال على ثلاثة محاور، هى: التعليم، والتدين، والسلطة. وفى ما يلى تفصيل ما أجملناه. وعلى الله قصد السبيل.
