تبدأ فعلاً رواية (بيير وجان) عندما يكتشف بيير أن أخاه الأصغر جان ليس من أبيه. الفضيحة هذه تخرجه عن صوابه: وها هو يهم على وجهه تاركاً البيت الأبوي لجان وأمه والوالد وترى الأم أن صديقتهم الأرملة الفتية والجميلة تليق عروساً لجان فتزوجه منها. فالرواية، التي هي أقرب إلى القصة الطويلة منها غلى الرواية، تتعاقب أحداثها على مستويين... مستوى الأب وجان اللذين لا يريان أي عنصر شاذ في تسلسل الأحداث فمستوى بيير والأم اللذين يعرفان أن محرك الأحداث هو استسلام الأم لمداعبات صديق آخر للعائلة.
هذا الازدواج الذي أوردته إحدى الصحف الباريسية بين أخبارها هو الذي استوقف موباسان فجعل منه رواية، الهام فيها الجانب السيكولوجي الذي تكشف عنه الأحداث ذاتها وعلى الخصوص أحاديث الشخوص مع بعضهم التي تبدي وفي الوقت ذاته تخفي.
الرواية ليست تحليلاً سيكولوجياً. وفنيتها في أنها تجعل من السرد استنطاقاً للأحداث، أو أنها تجعل من تسلسل الأحداث طريقاً للتعبير عما في النفوس.
