تبرز أهمية الكتاب من كونه واحد من أحدث إصدارات الأرشيف الوطني، وهو يوثق سيرة رابع حكام آل بوفلاح الشيخ طحنون بن شخبوط آل نهيان (1818-1833م) والدور الكبير الذي قام به في تاريخ قبيلة بني ياس خاصة وتاريخ الإمارات عامة، وأحداث فترة حكمه؛ باعتباره أبرز شيوخ آل نهيان الكرام في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، وقد بلغت قبيلة بني ياس في عهده أوج قوتها وبلغ نفوذها أقصى اتساعه فامتدّ ليشمل أبوظبي ودبي، وأجزاء من شبه جزيرة قطر، وليوا، والظفرة، وأطراف بادية العين وواحاتها. وتشير المقدمة إلى أن الشيخ طحنون كان يمتاز بقوة الشخصية والشجاعة والسخاء، وبُعد النظر والحكمة، وكان قائداً متميزاً عُرف بفطنته وقدرته الدبلوماسية والعسكرية على إدارة الأزمات وخوض المعارك، وحاكماً عادلاً اتسم نظام حكمه بالعدل والأخذ بمبدأ الشورى والمساواة بين جميع أفراد قبيلته؛ ففي فترة حكمه لم تخضع قبيلة بني ياس لأي من خصومها؛ إذ كانت بمثابة ميزان بين القوى المحلية المتنافسة، وهم: العمانيون والقواسم، والسعوديون. ويستهدف الكتاب من إحياء سيرة الشيخ طحنون إبراز ما لهذا الأمير الفلاحي من المآثر والذِكر الحَسَن أثناء فترة توليه حكم إمارة بني ياس: أبوظبي ودبي.
