هذا الكتاب يعطي المبادئ الأولية لتعليم طرق التصميم النموذجية للأنظمة وبعد ذلك يتقدم المتعلم بسهولة لإستيعاب المبادئ المتقدمة المستخدمة حالياً في تصميم الأنظمة وخاصة في مجال هندسة البرمجيات.
يقدم الكتاب في ثلاث عشر فصلاً، تتطرق الفصول الثلاث الأولى عن التعريف بالأنظمة وأنواعها ونبذة مختصرة عن دورة حياة النظام ثم إستخدام البرمجيات الحديثة لتسهيل خطوات تحليل الأنظمة.
يتطرق الفصل الرابع إلى جزء مهم من دورة حياة النظام وهو التحليل التمهيدي بينما يستعرض الفصل الخامس خطوات التحليل التفصيلي، يناقش الفصل السادس أدوات تصميم الأنظمة مثل قواعد البيانات، أما الفصل السابع فيهتم بطرق مخرجات النظام وأنواع التقارير.
ويناقش الفصل الثامن طرق إدخال البيانات إلى النظام الجديد، يتطرق الفصل التاسع إلى أنواع الملفات وطرق تصميمها، لغرض إستيعاب طرق تصميم قواعد البيانات ثم تخصيص الفصل العاشر لهذا الموضوع المهم.
تناقش الفصول الثلاثة الأخيرة مواضيع مهمة مرتبطة بنجاح النظام مثل تصميم البرمجيات وضمان الجودة وطرق تحويل الأنظمة من اليدوي إلى الأنظمة المحوسبة وأخيراً اختبار النظام والتدريب على كيفية إستخدامه.
