إنّ "علم الوضع" احد علوم العربية، وهو أصول وقواعد باحثة عن أحوال اللفظ العربي من حيث الوضع، وهو يعلم المتكلم والدارس كيف يتعامل مع الألفاظ، ويستعملها في أماكنها الصحيحة، ومن أهم مصادر هذا العلم "الرسالة العضدية" للعلامة عضد الدين الإيجي، وهي متن صغير يضم: مقدمة تكلمت عن أقسام الوضع للألفاظ بحسب العموم والخصوص.
أعقبها تقسيم الألفاظ الموضوعة من حيث مدلوليتها إلى قسمين: كلي، وجزئي.
تلك ذلك خاتمة اشتملت على اثني عشر تنبيهاً؛ فرقت بين متشابه أنواع القسمين السابقين.
وقد قام الشارح أبو القاسم الليثي السمرقندي بتفسير عبارة "العضدية" تفسيراً جلى أسرارها، وأوضح مستغلقها، وكشف عن مرجعيات ضمائرها، وأقام الأدلة على صحة تقريراتها وقوانينها، وتوج ذلك كله ما علق به الشيخان الحفني والدسوقي، فساهم في زيادة البيان والتوضيح، والتصحيح والترجيح.
