كتابُ "حكاية الجُنْد" هو كتابٌ عن "أدب الفظاعة"، إنه كتابٌ فريدٌ في بابِهِ لأنه يتناولُ سردياتِ الحربِ بوصفها نوعاً أدبياً، وتكمنُ فرادتُه في أن السردياتِ لا تعني الرواياتِ المعتمدةَ ولا مذكراتِ الجنرالات، بل هي يومياتُ الجُند العاديين ومذكراتُهم.
إنه حكايةُ المعذّبين الذين يتصاعدُ سردُهم للحرب مضمّخاً بالجراحِ والتشوّهات، سردٌ يُطلقُ عليه المؤلّفُ صفةَ "القوطيّ"، ويجلّي الكتابُ نوعاً أدبياً فرعياً، إنه "أدب الجراح" أو "أدب الإصابات والإعاقة".
وكُتّابُ هذه السردياتِ هم المشاركون الفعليون في حروب القرن العشرين، إنهم المقاتلون والضحايا الذين يتبادلون المواقعَ دائماً في خضمّ العنف الحربيّ، ولذلك جاء نسجُهم لآلامِهمِ كتابةً على غيرِ تقليدٍ سابقٍ، جاء عَفْويّاً منغمساً بالإثارة التي يتيحُها الخطرُ، رغم أن سرديّاتِهم لا تخلو من الأسلوبِ الذي يتناولُهُ المؤلِّفُ مُستخلصاً خصائصَهُ.
صموئيل هاينز، مؤلِّفُ الكتابِ، أستاذُ الأدبِ في جامعة برنستون الأمريكية، وطيّارٌ مقاتلٌ شاركَ في الحربِ العالمية الثانية، تناولَ في هذا الكتابِ مجموعةً كبيرةً من مدوّناتِ الحربيْن العالميتيْن، وبضمنها معارك الثورة العربية الكبرى وحرب الدبابات في شمال أفريقيا، وكارثة فيتنام، والضربةِ النووية لهيروشيما، وتجربةِ معسكرات الإعتقال النازية واليابانية، وكتابُه مزيجٌ من الدراسةِ الأكاديمية المتأمّلة والسردِ التفصيليّ المؤثِّرِ لتجربةِ الحربِ.
