يندرج موضوع هذا الكتاب ضمن مبحث الدولة المغربية في العصر الوسيط وتفاعلها مع المجتمع، هذا المبحث الذي شكل حجر الزاوية في مقدمة ابن خلدون، وخاض فيه علماء ومفكرون ودارسون مرموقون، وهو يحاول دراسة أشكال التفاعل بين المنطلقات النظرية والواقع التاريخي من جهتين: من جهة ما كتب نظرياً عن الدولة المغربية في العصر الوسيط، أسسها وسيرورتها وخصائصها، وتطبيق ذلك على الدولة الموحدية، ثم من جهة دراسة التجربة التاريخية الموحدية، على ضوء المبادئ والأفكار التي قامت عليها، وتتبع التطورات التي عرفها هذا التفاعل منذ كانت الدولة مجرد فكرة عند مؤسسيها حتى صارت أقوى دولة في المنطقة، ثم في طور التدهور.
ويهدف إلى دراسة الدولة الموحدية من الخارج، والتعرف عليها بإعتبارها نتاج مسار تاريخي، كما يحاول التعرف عليها من الداخل والكشف عن مضمونها ورصدها ككيان، ويسعى أيضاً إلى دراسة وتحليل السلوك السياسي الموحدي من حيث منطلقاته المرجعية وأسسه الإجتماعية، وأهدافه ومقاصده، وخصوصيات الدولة في ذلك كله.
