... أول مدخل في العربية إلى المأساة (التراجيديا) يتناول شؤونها جميعاً: نشأتها من الإحتفالات المأسوية، الميميسيس، الكاترسيس، الميثوس، الخورص - وشعراء المآسي اليونان اسخيلوس، سوفوكليس، أوريبيذس - والفلسفة المأسوية وعياً، ورؤيا تشمل الكون، والقدر، والإنسان، والمصير، والتاريخ، والسياسة، والحب، والأرض، والجسد.
وفي الكتاب رد على رأي نيتشه وشتينر والبحاثة الغربّيين مّمن يعتبرون أن الوعي المأسوي وقف على الإنسان الآري، وإن فن المأساة إمتياز غربي... وفي الرد دراسة هي الأولى من نوعها لما في أعياد الشرق الأوسط القديم ولما في العاشوراء والزار من المأسوية، ولما في المسرحيات "شهر زاد"، و"قدموس" و"جاد" من المأسوية والمأساة معاً.
من كتابة الرواية المأسوية ("الهارب" 61) إلى المسرحيات المأسوية ("البعل"، "بابل"، "الأزميل"، التي فازت جميعاً بجوائز جمعية أصدقاء الكتاب 61، 62، 63) إلى كتابة المأساة ("جاد" التي نالت جائزة منظمة الأونيسكو في باريس لأفضل مسرحية عربية 68- 70)، حتى هذا الكتاب ("المدخل إلى المأساة والفلسفة المأسوية" 68- 78) - يختصر انطوان معلوف، في عقدين من الزمان، خبرة مشرقية أصيلة بالمأساة والمأسوية، فريدة في الأدب العربي، بدأت بمعاناة مأسوية شخصية كان من ثمارها مسرحية "الإزميل" التي دشّنت بها لجنة مهرجات بعلبك الدولية المسرح اللبناني الحديث، وأغنتها من بعد أحداث العالم العربي، وخاصة لبنان، في العقدين السادس والسابع من القرن العشرين، فكتب المؤلف من وحيها المأساة المعاصرة "جاد".
وفي هذا الكتاب الذي يتوّج تلك الخبرة يتقرّب المؤلف، أستاذ فقه المسرح اليوناني في الجامعة اللبنانية، من المأساة تدريجياً، في محاولة دائبة للكشف عن سرّها العميق، آخذاً بسياق منطق متصل تنفح فيه حرارة إيمان من يكتشف "السر" ويعبّر عنه للمرة الأولى...
قال في الكتاب الأب الدكتور بولس نويا، أستاذ الفلسفة والتصوف في جامعة السوربون: "إنه أتمّ وأعمق ما كتب بالعربية في موضوع المأساة والمأسويّة...".
