تعتبر السياحة عملاق القرن الواحد والعشرين فقد احتلت مكاناً متميزاً بالنسبة لمعظم دول العالم سواء كانت دول صناعية كبرى أو دولة نامية وذلك للأهمية الاقتصادية التي تحققها لهذه الدول، فقد نجحت السياحة في إصلاح إقتصاديات العديد من الدول مثل إسبانيا والصين.
ومما لا شك فيه أن السياحة أصبحت من أكبر الصناعات في العالم بل وتعتبر قاطرة التنمية في العديد من الدول.
فالسياحة أصبحت الآن طلباً هاماً من ضروريات الحياة فأصبح الإنسان يحب التنقل والتجوال بحثاً عن الجديد ورغبة منه في الحصول على الترفيه والمتعة.
وقد حققت السياحة نمواً كبيراً بمعدلات متزايدة ومتواصلة نتيجة إهتمام العديد من الدول في العالم بمقومات السياحة وعناصر الجذب والأساليب الحديثة في السوق والإدارة.
ومع ظهور كثير من المتغيرات على السياحة تطورت من ظاهرة بسيطة إلى صناعة كبيرة وأصبح لها أسسها وأركانها وأجّهزتها المتعددة، فانتشرت الفنادق في كل مكان وأقيمت المعاهد التعليمية المتخصصة، وبدأ الإهتمام بمقومات الجذب السياحي وتسابقت الدول في تقديم التسهيلات السياحية وتأمين البنية التحتية المناسبة لجذب أكبر عدد من السياح.
وطبقاً لتوقعات جون ينبزت الأمريكي، "فإن إقتصاد العالم في هذا القرن الحالي سوف تقوده ثلاثة صناعات خدمية هي صناعة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات وصناعة السياحة والسفر".
