يعد موضوع الشخصية من أعقد الموضوعات التي تناولها علم النفس، ويتضح ذلك بتأكيد الكثيرين على صعوبة تحديد المقصود بمصطلح الشخصية، وصعوبة الوصول إلى تعريف شامل ومُرضٍ لها، حيث يساعد فهم الشخصية ساعد في الكشف عن فاعلية الفرد، وشروط تحقيق هذه الفاعلية، ومن ثم الوصول إلى التفسير المناسب للظواهر النفسية المختلفة، فالشخصية هي المحور الأساس الذي تدور حوله معظم الدراسات النفسية والتربوية، فضلاً عن أنها تعد المصدر الرئيس لمعرفة مظاهر السلوك البشري.
وقد طُرِحت مؤخراً في مجال علم النفس نظرية حديثة لأنماط الشخصية تدعى بــ(نظرية الإنيكرام) (The Enneagram Theory)، التي صنفت الأفراد إلى تسعة أنماط متمايزة فيما بينها من حيث الخصائص، والسمات المشتركة ضمن النمط الواحد الذي يختلف عن سائر الأنماط الأخرى، وهذه الأنماط هي (المساعد، والمنجز، والمتفرد، والباحث، والمخلص، والمتحمس، والمتحدي، وصانع السلام، والمصلح)، وتتوزع هذه الأنماط التسعة على ثلاثة مراكز رئيسة للشخصية فيحتوي كل مركز على ثلاثة أنماط، وهذه المراكز هي (مركز المشاعر، ومركز التفكير، ومركز الغريزة) على الترتيب.
وعلى الرغم من شمولية هذه النظرية وتكاملها، إلا أننا نجد قصوراً في المؤلفات التي تناولتها بالطرح والتوضيح.
لذا، جاء هذا الكتاب محاولاً سد النقص في المكتبة النفسية لمثل هذه الموضوعات فتناول أنماط الشخصية على وفق نظرية الإنيكرام في فصله الأول، والقيم في فصله الثاني، أما في الفصل الثالث فقد تناول الذكاء الإجتماعي، فضلاً عن وضع مقاييس تقيس كل من هذه المتغيرات الثلاثة.
