وقد قضى الآمدي معظم حياته المديدة مع كل هذه الفنون طالباً، ومدرسا ومؤلفاً. وامتدت رحلاته العلمية لمدة ستة وستين عاماً. قضاها في رحلات علمية مستمرة زار خلالها عواصم الثقافة والعلم في عصره. ومع هذه الشهرة العريضة التي كان الآمدي يتمتع بها في عصره والعصور التالية؛ فقد طلا مجهولاً إلى حد كبير في عصرنا كمتكلم إلا من إشارات إلى بعض آرائه ترد احيانا في الكتب الكلامية: كالمواقف، والمقاصد وغيرها.
أما كتاب: أبكار الأفكار في أصول الدين: فهو بحق أهم كتب الآمدي الكلامية؛ بل أهمها على الإطلاق؛ فقد اتفق اصحاب التراجم على وصف الآمدي بصاحب الأبكار. وقد اتضح لي بعد الدراسة والمقارنة أنه من أهم الكتب المؤلفة في علم الكلام. فهو حاو لمسائل الأصول محيط بها، بدون إطالة مملة، وبغير اختصار مخل. وهو بحق اسم على مسمى؛ فقد جمع فيه مؤلفه كما قال "أبكار أفكار أرباب العقول".
وقد ألفه الآمدي بعد أن بلغ درجة علمية يدل بها قائلا "ولم كنا مع ذلك فقد حققنا أصوله، ونقحنا فصوله. وأحطنا بمعانيه، وأوضحنا مباينه وأظهرنا أغواره، وكشفنا أسراره، وفزنا فيه بقصب سبق الأولين، وحزنا غايات أفكار المتقدمين والمتأخرين، واستترعنا منه خلاصة الألباب وفصلنا القشر عن اللباب. وهذا الكتاب كما يفهم من عنوانه، وكما اتضح لي، قد اشتمل على معظم الأفكار المهمة في الفكر الإسلامي العقدي حتى عصره، بل على الفكر العقدي الإنساني على الإطلاق، وناقشها، ورد على ما يتنافى مع الدين منها وأبطله بحججه الدامغة، وبراهينه الساطعة؛ فهو بحق يغني عن مطالعة الكثير من كتب المتقدمين، لأنه قد اشتمل على معظم الأفكار المهمة فيها.
