الهندسة الصحية يمكن اعتبارها لفظا جديدا في مجال الهندسة- فلقد كانوا قديما يسمونها هندسة البلديات (Municipal Engineering) ويطلقون خطأ لقب المهندس الصحي على الفنيين في أعمال السمكرة والسباكة، وكذلك على مقاولي أعمال التوصيلات الصحية مثل أعمالالمياه والمجاري والتهوية داخل المنازل- إلا أن الأعمال التى تدخل في نطاق الهندسة الصحية حاليا أوسع بكثير من ذلك النطاق الضيق إذ أصبح المهندس الصحي (Sanitary Engineer) هو ذلك المهندس الذي تلقي من العلوم والتمرين ما يسمح له بالقيام بتصميم والإشراف على تنفيذ وإدارة جميع المشروعات الهندسية. ويجدر القول ان عمل المهندس يشمل البيئة التى نعيش فيها وأثرها على الصحة وتحسينها بتنفيذ المشروعات الهندسية التى تؤدي إلى منع انتشار مسببات الأمراض.
