ومع الإيمان بأن التاريخ تصنعه الشعوب بنضالها، إلا انه في الوقت نفسه فإن تلك الشعوب تحتاج إلى قيادات مبدعة تمتلك مواصفات معينة تؤهلها لتهيئة الشعب وتمكينه من رسم مسار تاريخه وصنعه فتترك بصماتها على الأحداث بصورة واضحة.
ولا شك إن السيد علوان الياسري تولى الزعامة في ميادين مختلفة وكان أحد أولئك الرجال الذين ساهموا في صنع أحداث في العراق وتفانوا في بذل الجهود لرسم مستقبل سياسي له وبناء دولة عصرية ذات سيادة تامة فيه.
لذلك، يتناول المؤلف هذه الشخصية التاريخية في فصول هذا الكتاب ليحفظ له ولأمثاله من الرجال في التاريخ تضحياتهم ومجهوداتهم الوطنية التي قطعت ثمارها الأجيال اللاحقة بالإضافة إلى ما ذلك من عبرة قد تدبر الخطى للحاضر والمستقبل. وبناءً عليه، قسم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: السيد علوان الياسري ومرحلة مبكرة من النشاط السياسي 1914-1915. الفصل الثاني: السيد علوان الياسري والموقف الوطني في مواجهة الإحتلال البريطاني للعراق 1920-1921. الفصل الثالث: السيد علوان الياسري ومرحلة جديدة من النشاط السياسي في ظل الإنتداب البريطاني 1921-1923. الفصل الرابع: السيد علوان الياسري والعمل الوطني لتوكيد الحضور السياسي 1934-1939. الفصل الخامس: السيد علوان الياسري والإنتقال إلى صف المعارضة الوطنية وتدبير إنتفاضة مايس 1941.
