يشرح أوتو كارويي مبادئ الموسيقى بشكل واضح وسهل مع استعمال الأمثلة الكثيرة وتطبيقات من أعمال موسيقية معروفة لتقريب المادة إلى ذهن القارئ. يبدأ المؤلف في تقديم مبادئ الموسيقى من أبسط لبناتها الأولية، ماهو الصوت، وكيف يتكون وما الفرق بين الأصوات والموسيقى، ثم يقدم نظام التدوين الموسيقي بشكل تفصيلي. يتناول بالدرس الإيقاع والسرعة وديناميكية الصوت، ثم يشرح أسس النظام الموسيقي الأوروبي المستندة إلى التون ونصف التون والأبعاد الموسيقية، وبناء السالم من هذه الأبعاد.
ينتقل في الفصل الثاني إلى تعريف اللحن والتآلف الصوتي )الهارموني (والمركبات الصوتية وأهم أنواعها وقوانين تتابع هذه المركبات الصوتية. أما الفصل الثالث فخصصه المؤلف للحديث عن الأشكال الموسيقية والبناء الموسيقي، بعدها ينتقل في الفصل الرابع إلى الآلات الموسيقية وأنواعها وخصائصها وميزاتها. أخيراً ينتقل لتوضيح الخطوات العلمية المتبعة في قراءة النص الموسيقي المكتوب لعدة آلات، ويختم الكتاب بملاحق وجدول بأسماء الآلات الموسيقية بعدة لغات.
