يشكل هذا الكتاب مدخلاً إلى الثقافة الموسيقية بدءاً بتعريفاتها مروراً بنشأتها وأنواعها وتطورها على مرّ التاريخ من موسيقا تقليدية أو كلاسيكية وإنتهاءً بالموسيقى الإلكترونية، فتحضر عبر صفحات الكتاب أنواع مختلفة من الأنواع الموسيقية جاز، الهيب هوب، موسيقى البونك، وغيرها، فتوضح المؤلفة كيف تم الإتصال بين الثقافات العالمية في مجال الموسيقى، وكيف دَمجت أساليبهم الموسيقية الأصلية في أغلب الأحيان إلى الأساليب الجديدة.
على سبيل المثال، يحتوي أسلوب البوجراس الأمريكي العناصر من ألمانية وآيرلندية وإسكتلندية وإنجليزية آيرلندية، وبعض التقاليد الصوتية للموسيقا الأفريقية والأمريكية، وتشير إلى أن العديد من المهرجانات الموسيقية الحالية "تحتفل بـ a نوع موسيقى معين وموسيقى الترانس والتكنو... ويندرجات تحت قسم الموسيقى الإلكترونية".
وقد بدأت تنتشر هذه النوعية من الموسيقيا في أوائل الثمانينات وبالتحديد عام 1982، عندما خرجت أعمال فريق Massive Attack للنور، ومنذ ذلك الحين، انتشرت بشكل كبير في الغرب (أوروبا)، ومن أشهر الأسماء اللامعة في مجال الموسيقى الإلكترونية Armin Van Buuren.
في الكتاب أيضاً تغطي المؤلفة أنواع التأليف الموسيقي العربي وخاصة الغنائي الذي يختلف بإختلاف النظم والبناء اللحني، ونذكر منه: القصيدة الغنائية في مصر والعراق والموشح في الأندلس، والموال في الغناء الشعبي، والسباعي (النعماني) والدور (الزجل) والطقطوقة والديالوج والنشيد والأوبريت وغيرها مع الشرح لكيفية إشتغال كل نوع وأبرز من عمل فيه من الموسيقيين العرب.
وتختتم الكتاب بــ "لقطات من علم الصوت" ويشرح هذا الفصل معنى الإهتزازات الصوتية وطبيعة حدوث الأصوات في الآلات المختلفة وأسباب تغير طبقاتها...
