يتناول هذا الكتاب بالبحث والمناقشة والحوار أصلين كبيرين تتأسس عليهما جميع المعتقدات المسيحية: أولهما: العقيدة في طبيعة المسيح وكونه إلها أو أقنوما من إله، وقولهم بالتثليث (الأب والابن والروح القدس)، وأنهم واحد في الجوهر متساوون في القدرة والمجد، وأن بين الأقانيم تمييزاً بين الوظائف والعمل.
ثانيهما: عقيدة الصلب والفداء، وهي العقيدة التي تنص على أن المسيح صلب ليكفر الخطيئة التي ارتكبها آدم تحت تأثير زوجته حينما أكلا من الشجرة المحرمة، وانتقلت الخطيئة بطريق الوراثة إلى جميع نسله، وكانت ستظل عالقة بهم إلى يوم القيامة، لولا أن افتداهم المسيح بدمه كفارة عن خطاياهم.
وهو يناقش هاتين العقيدتين بهدوء مستخدما العقل والنقل، أو الفطرة والكتاب المقدس، ففي كليهما نجد ما يفند هاتين العقيدتين، ويعطي البدائل الصحيحة عنهما.
