يأتي هذا العمل حصيلة لاهتمامي بالإجابة عن التساؤل عما إذا كان مسرح يعقوب صنوع James Sanua ]1893-1912]، أبي المسرح المصري الحديث، أوروبي الأصل تماماً، أم أنه ذو جذور تتعالق وتقليداً مصرياً قديماً خاصاً بالمسرح الشعبي. وفي ورقةِ بحثٍ تمهيدية سابقة قدمت في مؤتمر المستشرقين التاسع عشر الذي انعقد بباريس عام 1973، حاولتُ أن أوضح أن المحبَّظين او الممثلين المتجولين، الذين ذكرهم إدوارد وليم لين في كتابه "المصريون المحدثون: شمائلهم وعاداتهم"، كانوا نشطين من ذي قبل في القرن السابع عشر.
في هذا الكتاب وسَّعت نطاق بحثي ليمتد إلى الإسلام خلال العصور الوسطى، وقد توصلت عبر هذا البحث، على خلاف ما ذهب اليه كل من الباحثين العرب والمستشرقين الغربيين، الى وجود مسرح حي في العالم العربي ما قبل الحديث، فقد واصل العرب تقاليد المسرح الشعبي في الشرق الأدنى وطوروها فيما قبل وبعد مسرحيات خيال الظل، والدمى المتحركة، ومسرحيات الآلام المعروفة باسم التعازي.
ومن ثم، فإن هذا الكتاب يعين على اقتفاء أثر جذور المسارح الجزائرية والشامية والمصرية التي أرسى دعائمها كل من: "إبراهام دانينوس" في الجزائر في مسرحيته المطبوعة طباعة حجرية عام 1847 بعنوان "نزهة المشتاق وغصة العشاق في مدينة طرياق في العراق"، و"مارون النقاش" (1817 – 1855) في بيروت عام 1848، و"يعقوب صنوع" في القاهرة عام 1870.
