موضوع المحاكاة فهو افعال الناس وشخصياتهم وعواطفهم، والشخصيات التي يحاكيها الشاعر إما أن تكون أفضل من الفرد العادي كما في التراجيديا أو أدني من الفرد العادي كما في الكوميديا، وبالنسبة لطريقة المحاكاة هناك القصة المباشرة، وهناك مزيج من الشكل القصصي والشكل الدرامي كما في الملحمة، وهناك الشكل الدرامي الخالص حيث نجد الحادثة بأكملها تمثل أمام الجمهور.
يبدأ أرسطو تحليله للبناء في التراجيديا في الفصل السادس من كتاب الشعر بالتعريف الشهير الذي يستند إلي تقسيم الموضوع إلي العناصر الثلاثة المكونة لطبيعة الشعر وهي موضوع المحاكاة ووسيلة المحاكاة، فيقول إن التراجيديا هي محاكا لفعل مكتمل في حد ذاته، له حيز معين ، بلغة بها متعة، تتم بواسطة تصوير الفعل وليس من خلال السرد، هدفها إثارة عاطفتي الشفقة والرعب لكي تصل من خلال ذلك إلي التطهير.
